Italian over-reaction interfering with Indian affairs: Italy today (New Delhi, Aug. 28) said it would summon the Indian envoy in Rome to register its protest against the attack on Christians in Orissa[1]. It also said it would ask France, the European Union head, to address the matter. The tough talk — this is the first such reaction to the communal violence in Orissa from a foreign government — could prove politically sensitive for Delhi as the Opposition might link it with Sonia Gandhi’s Italian origin[2]. The Vatican had yesterday “deplored’ the killings. The matter came under Italy’s glare when its council of ministers met today. “Minister of European policies Andrea Ronchi raised in the council the serious problem of (the) repeated violence that occurred recently in India against Christians,” said the Italian government’s English translation of the summary of the meeting. “The ministry of foreign affairs will convene (the) ambassador of India to Rome to represent the government’s strong expectation of an effective preventive and repressive action by the Indian authorities in respect of such unacceptable acts of violence.” According to the summary, foreign minister Franco Frattini “obtained the consent and encouragement” of the council to request France to put the matter on the agenda of the European council of foreign ministers’ meeting. Sources in India’s foreign ministry described Italy’s response as rare as the violence didn’t involve its citizens and was an internal matter of another sovereign country.

“In summoning the Indian Ambassador and urging New Delhi to take “decisive action" to curb ‘anti-Christian violence" in Orissa, the Government of Italy has breached diplomatic propriety and caused a public relations disaster of enormous magnitude[4]. The violence, while entirely undesirable, is scarcely a one-sided slaughter of the innocents, though a country with a history of throwing religious minorities to the lions would probably be hard put to tell the difference.   “The killing of a Hindu monk and his associates, and the retaliatory murder of Christian and non-Christian workers in church institutions in Orissa, are crimes that Indian authorities must act against and punish expeditiously. It is an internal matter of India, in no way suggestive of state-sponsored attacks on any community or religious groups and requires no interference or comment from the self-appointed high priests in Rome[5].   “In reality, the gratuitous actions of the Italian Government represent a once-proud society"s increasing irrelevance and political downfall. The Italian Government is heavily dependent on neo-fascists[6] who are promoting a xenophobic, anti-immigrant agenda. Indeed, the new Mayor of Rome is publicly greeted with straight-arm salutes and enthusiastic cries of “Duce! Duce!" — a noun last used to describe Italy"s comic-book wartime dictator, Benito Mussolini. Italy"s economic collapse has been sharpened by its establishment"s congenital suspicion of globalisation and foreign investment. Acquisition — and thereby rescue — of the country"s bigger but increasingly beleaguered business corporations is actively discouraged. Gripped by paranoia, the Italian political class is battling phantoms — the newest being the so-called Christian persecution in India. Not only is it doing no favour to Indian Christians — who surely would not welcome a client-guarantor relationship with an alien Government — it has also seriously jeopardised Italy"s goodwill among the Indian middle class.

“The Italian Government"s poor diplomacy follows the Pope"s condemnation of bloodletting in Orissa. As the head of a denominational enterprise, which is what the Vatican is, Pope Benedict XVI is perhaps justified in raising questions about the security of Christians everywhere. However, in the immediate context of India, he is choosing to look at the issue only selectively. In Orissa, like elsewhere in India, Christian evangelists — largely from Pentecostal and Baptist groups in the United States but sometimes from Catholic orders as well — look upon local populations as a market, and converts as market share. Some of them are engaged not in any attempt to genuinely win adherents to Jesus"s faith, but to denigrate nativist cultures[7] and religious traditions and convert by inducement[8].

“In Orissa, the recent trouble began when a Hindu monk who opposed such practices was murdered. He was targeted by a consortium of Christian fundamentalists and Maoists, united in taking on a common enemy. It may seem an unlikely alliance but is no different, in its theological inspirations, from the bogus gospel of Liberation Theology preached by renegade Catholic priests and Communist guerrillas in South America in the 1970s. Pope Benedict, like his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, opposed Liberation Theology in the New World, but appears to see it as a fair strategy for ‘harvesting souls" in India. Both the Vatican"s theological hypocrisy and double standards and the Italian Government"s diplomatic outrage need to be countered. The philosophy underlying the Pope"s arguments can be answered by Hindu religious leaders. As for the jejune Italian Government, a snub from the Ministry of External Affairs should be enough.”

Italy horrified by ‘Clockwork Orange" assault on monks: On August 28, 2008, when the Pope and Ital were accusing India for the attacks on Christians etc., Italians have been left shocked by a ferocious assault on Franciscan monks by hooded thugs at a monastery in the foothills of the Alps[9], which has been compared to incidents seen in the film ‘A Clockwork Orange".

 

Father Sergio Baldin, 48, the guardian of the San Colombano Belmonte monastery near Turin, and three elderly monks from the Franciscan order of Friars Minor, were having their evening meal when they were attacked by three hooded men who gagged and bound them before punching, kicking and beating them with clubs. Father Baldin suffered severe head injuries but also has “serious respiratory problems" because he choked on his food while being assaulted, doctors say. He has had brain surgery and was in a coma. Father Salvatore Magliano, 86, Father Emanuele Battagliotti, 81, and Father Martino Gurini, 76 suffered less serious injuries, but were still being treated in hospital today. Speaking from his hospital bed, Father Battagliotti said the monks had been eating “a dish of spinach" when they heard noises outside. “I got up to have a look, but the moment I got to the door I was attacked - suddenly, immediately. I was struck on the head with a blow which made me totter," he said. “Father Sergio (Baldin) came to my aid. He put himself in front of me to try and defend me, but he too was knocked down without mercy. They hit him until he stopped crying out. Then they beat Father Salvatore and Father Martin as well. It was terrible."

Cardinal Severino Poletto, the Archbishop of Turin, who visited the victims in hospital, said the attack was “beyond comprehension". The only possible explanation was that the assailants had been “either drugged or possessed, or both", he said. Police said the motive appeared to robbery, although the monks only had “small amounts of money". A spokesman said: “Presumably the attackers thought they would find riches at the monastery." Italian media compared the attack to A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess"s story of violent young thugs, filmed in 1971 by Stanley Kubrick. Father Gabriele Trivellin, provincial head of the Friars Minor, said the assault amounted to “mindless, savage and gratuitous violence". He said the hooded men had carried on beating the monks even though they offered no resistance. Colonel Antonio De Vita, head of the Carabinieri in the province of Turin, said a manhunt was under way for the perpetrators, with road blocks set up in the area of the monastery.

When Italy could not protect its monks, it has no business to interfere with India: The Acron[10] says, “Italy has no right to demand anything. It may be within its rights to express selective, biased, communal concern over the killings of one particular religious community in India, but “demand”? Well, the Indian ambassador in Rome could perhaps task his lieutenants to look up the English-Diplomatese dictionary for the equivalent of “stuff it”. Preferably, pleasantly. He could, if he would like to permit himself a moment of indiscretion, point out that Italy itself is hardly a safe place for Christian monks.”

Atany Dey[11] has recorded, “The puppet — aka Blue Turban — carries out the orders of his boss, the madam from Italy. The puppet appoints ambassadors. When the Italian foreign minister demands that the Indian ambassador show up, it is quite likely that he will show up and bend his knees and with bowed head say, “jee huzoor, jee huzoor” (or whatever is the equivalent in Italian) and do as told by the Italian. His immediate boss does that to another Italian, doesn’t he? I can imagine that he would then, without turning his back and still on his knees, slowly back away from the presence of the Italian as any subject of an imperial power would do. He is after all the puppet of a puppet who answers to an Italian.”

The Italian interest in Orissa has been multifarious: The Italians have taken much interest in Orissa and such interest has been varied ranging from AIDS to cultural studies and all involving pumping dollars through NGOs. A team of Italian experts specialized in the institutional, legal, managerial, technical, social and economic aspects[12] related to the protection, preservation and valorization of the cultural patrimony and in tourism development, carried out an identification mission in November 2003. A draft report was delivered in December 2003, which identified two projects concerning immediate measures for cultural heritage protection and promotion. Thus, the routing of UN, World Bank and other aids through NGOs has been modus operandi for the Christian missionaries. Significantly, as it is declared by the financial agencies that banking relations between India and Italy are reliable and problem-free as SBI has a representative office in Milan and four Italian banks have representations in India viz Unicredito, BNL, SaoPaolo IMI and Banca Intesa. All these banks have links with Vatican, Vatican banks[13] and of course Vatican financial scams[14].

 

The Evangelical Project in Orissa[15]: There has been Italian connection to disturb the peace of Orissa aided and abetted through agencies. As Kandhamal burns, the BJD-BJP coalition in Orissa is under severe strain. It should be obvious to even the most amateur of political observers that the murder of Swami Lakshmananda was a pre-emptive strike at unravelling this coalition. The unabated violence against Christians is not just unacceptable but is plain stupidity to provoke it for it only widens chasm between the BJD and the BJP ahead of the elections to hand over Orissa on a platter to the Congress. The Naveen Patnaik Administration and the BJP must realise the stakes are too high for the NDA to not contain the violence and to bring the perpetrators of the murdee and subsequent violence to justice.

 

Having said that the events in Orissa are symptomatic of a deeper malaise that needs to be fully understood. When violence had flared in Kandhamal during Christmas last yera Offstumped had pointed out that it was a feud over entitlements while highlighting the mischief mongering by the National Minorities Commission’s fact finding team. The bias in the NCM’s investigation is clear from these remarks that find place in the official report.

 

The 1991 Census shows the Christians constituted 75597 of the population of Kandhmal district whereas in the 2001 Census their population had gone up to 117950. While the increase in population in percentage terms is substantial, there is no evidence whatsoever that this increase occurred under duress or on account of inducement to conversion. A stringent law regarding conversion the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act has been on the statute books for the past four decades. The NCM Members asked both district officials and senior officials in the State Secretariat whether any cases had been reported or filed with regard to infringement of this law over the past 10 years. Not one incident of forcible conversion was cited or adduced. We also inquired from the Church representatives whether they keep a register of conversions. Such a register is a routine practice at the time of baptism. The Church representatives confirmed that they indeed maintained such a register. But no one has apparently bothered to check it. In fact the Archbishop of Bhubaneshwar told the NCM team that neither he nor anyone in the Diocese was ever summoned by the authorities with regard to matters relating to conversion. From the above the NCM team has inferred that there is no basis whatsoever to justify the anti-conversion campaign. On the other hand, this mischievous campaign has created an atmosphere of prejudice and suspicion against the Christian community and Christian priests and organizations.

 

It is clear from the above that the NCM team did the bare minimum necessary to understand the social effects of evangelical activity in Orissa. But what is confounding is the arrogance of the NCM in concluding that there is “no basis” for what it calls an “anti-conversion” campaign.

 

Offstumped will now detail the Evangelical Project in Orissa and the foreign entities behind it. To understand this Project better, Offstumped draws the attention of its readers to foreign evangelocal entities “World Encounter” and LCMC (a Lutheran Church Congregation). The LCMC has a quarterly newsletter and in its edition for the first quarter of 2007, the LCMC newsletter carried a detailed 1 page story focused on Orissa where it invited congregations in the U.S.A for what it called

Orissa Evangelical Fellowship (OEF), an LCMC association of churches in India, has invited congregations in the US to encourage them in their efforts to share the Good News with the unreached people of India.

 

What’s interesting is why this project zeroed in on Orissa of all places, in its own words. “The people of Orissa are primarily tribal/animists and Hindus who worship spirits, trees, rocks, and other objects of nature. The heart of the OEF vision is focused on church planting, discipleship, and leadership…Groups of believers worship inhomes and thatch-roofed churches. In the midst of opposi-tion to the Gospel,they are committed to reaching their Hindu neighbors and families with the Good News that has transformed their lives .

 

This precisely is the problem in Orissa - aggressive proselytization with foreign funding and support thats invasive of people’s privacy with a clear objective of “planting churches”, expanding to “new villages” and evangelizing to “Hindu Neighbors”. This not about the practice of Christianity in Orissa. This is about changing the social demographics and the fabric of society in poor rural pockets of Orissa, one village, one neighborhood at a time.

 

To appreciate how well prepared this Evangelical Project in its targetting of Orissa, consider this compilation of target Villages in Orissa by geo-cordinates. To further appreciate the sophistication and subterfuge with which proselytization is conducted in Orissa in the post-Staines era read this blog post by a Brian Zahnd, founder and senior pastor of Word of Life Church, a 4,000 member congregation in St. Joseph, Missouri.

 

“I was never allowed to sit on the platform and was never introduced as a preacher. P.G. would say that he and his wife, Lilly, and his daughter, Grace, were the preachers. They would get up, speak for five minutes, and then P.G. would say he had a friend he wanted to introduce and bring a “greeting.” P.G. would introduce me as a friend bringing a greeting, and then as he handed me the microphone, he would whisper, “Preach for an hour and a half.” We did this twice a day and every evening. So three times a day I would bring a 90 minute “greeting.” I was told the police were wondering, “Who is this greeting man?” Because several thousand local people were coming at night, the evening meetings took on the tone of an evangelistic event. The last three nights I preached strong evangelistic messages….”

 

The Orissa Government maintains a list of foreign contributions to NGOs in Orissa. The list is worth reading to appreciate how much money was pumped from International sources to further the evangelical project in Orissa during the earlier part of this decade - 2.3 crores to Orissa Fellowship Ministry, 12 crores for Cuttack Roman Catholic Diocese, 2.73 crore for Indian Evangelical Association, 1.4 crores for Brethren in Christ Church, 2.8crores for East India Mission, 4.4 crores for Joypore Evangelical Lutheran Church … the list goes on.

 

Of all the digging up by Offstumped, this appeal for foreign funds by a Pastor from Orissa should take the cake, replete with address and details of Bank Accounts posted as a comment on a Christian Financial Ministries site, its funny and tragic at the same time.

Had the NCM been honest and objective in its fact finding it would have detailed out the influence of foreign sponsored Evangelical Activities. The fact that this kind of evangelical proselytization with the aid and support of foreign entities finds no mention in the NCM’s report dents the NCM’s credibility while ascribing all the blame to the VHP’s so-called “anti-conversion” campaign.

 

Offstumped Bottomline: There is a critical distinction between the religious freedom of the Minority Community to practice its faith and the freedom to aggresively proselytize flush with funds and support by foreign entities. The former is a fundamental freedom enshrined in the Indian Constitution the latter is a privilege that has been abused to the detriment of the social fabric of poor rural communities. As Orissa picks up the pieces from this spate of violence the Evangelical Ministries would do well to reflect on the damage done by aggresive proselytization.

 

Bill Gates announces USD 23 million HIV/AIDS grant to India: What Bill Gates has interest in AIDS[16] and its aid to India? On the day he leaves Microsoft to work for his pet social sector projects, software pioneer Bill Gates on Friday announced a USD 23 million grant to India to control the scourge of HIV/AIDS in the country. The announcement was made when Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss called upon him at his office in Seattle, United States. Gates appreciated the efforts made by the Minister for improving the Health sector in India and congratulated him for the effective implementation of the National Rural Health Mission in India. Gates announced that the foundation would make a USD 23 million grant to India which would be spent through National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) in India over the next three years. In response to a query from Gates regarding the polio situation in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the Minister explained the action taken by the government for its eradication from the country. At a separate meeting of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for which Gates would work full time after Microsoft, Ramadoss discussed the polio situation in UP and Bihar, Tobacco control programme, India"s Drugs Regulatory Authority, HIV/AIDS situation in India and several other issues. The Health Minister also made an appeal for popularising Yoga and healthy life style across the globe. The Foundation has already announced a grant of USD 58 million for HIV/AIDS Avahan Programme for a period of five years.

 

What the Christians have to do? Under the circumstance, it is better that the Christians need not indulge and interfere with the Indian affairs. In fact, they should advice their Indian believers not to interfere with the Hindu religion, scripture, rituals, etc., under the guise of inculturation, dialogue, etc., carried on only to evangalize and convert. And this has been the starting point for all the trouble. Knowingly, if the continue to fish in troubled waters, actually, they are responsible for adding fuel to the fire. Let them be restrained, including the Pope, the Vatican, the Italian groups, BBC, etc.
